A young mother’s selfless act of courage ended in tragedy on a quiet Southern California street. Emily Panuco, just 26 years old, lost her life protecting her five-year-old son from a brutal dog attack, a horrifying event that unfolded while visiting her mother’s home.
The visit began with innocent excitement – a trip to Big River to see a litter of week-old puppies. Panuco, traveling from her home in Parker, Arizona, and her son eagerly anticipated meeting the new arrivals, nestled in a cardboard box near the front door alongside the adult dogs.
The idyllic scene shattered in an instant. As her son reached for the puppies, three adult dogs – including the mother of the litter – suddenly lunged, their aggression focused on the small child. Without hesitation, Panuco threw herself between her son and the attacking animals.
