Simon Cowell, the famously critical judge of Britain’s Got Talent, has found himself on the receiving end of a reprimand – not for a harsh critique, but for a surprisingly sticky habit. Producers are reportedly exasperated by his constant chewing of gum, a seemingly innocuous quirk that has spiraled into a minor on-set crisis.
The issue isn’t just the sound, though Cowell himself admits to chewing “really loudly” and driving everyone mad. It’s the disposal. A recent discovery of gum stuck under his desk revealed a “masticated mess,” prompting a swift, though initially unsuccessful, attempt to implement a complete ban.
Enforcing rules on Simon Cowell, it seems, is a challenge in itself. The gum saga took another turn when a wad mysteriously adhered to his black trousers, unnoticed as he strode onto stage before a captivated audience. The incident highlighted the pervasiveness of the habit and the difficulty in controlling it.
The ban has now been extended to the entire judging panel – Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and KSI – in an effort to maintain a gum-free zone. Cowell’s preferred brand, a £5 specialty gum promising fresh breath, is now off-limits during filming.
But the gum isn’t the only source of playful chaos. Before the latest season launched, Cowell’s mischievous side emerged during a stay in Blackpool. A visit to a local joke shop resulted in the purchase of a collection of stink bombs, much to the dismay of the production team.
Amanda Holden revealed the stink bomb incident led to a stern talking-to from producers, and the items were quickly confiscated. This season, the judges were particularly competitive over the coveted Golden Buzzer, leading to moments of genuine, and sometimes physical, rivalry.
Alesha Dixon recounted a dramatic dive across the judging desk to secure a Golden Buzzer for a particularly impressive act, even sustaining a minor injury in the process. She described the season as a return to the “chaos that we love” on the show, a sentiment echoed by her colleagues.
Hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly, observing from the wings, confirmed the heightened level of surprise and unpredictability this season. They emphasized that Britain’s Got Talent remains unique in its ability to consistently deliver the unexpected, keeping both the audience and the production team on their toes.
The show’s 19th season promises a distinctly “bonkers and British” affair, filled with memorable performances and the enduring, often amusing, antics of its judging panel. It’s a testament to the show’s longevity that even a simple chewing gum habit can become a source of such entertaining disruption.
