Panic rippled through the cabin as a Delta flight, just minutes into its journey from Savannah to Atlanta, abruptly turned back towards the airport. The unsettling event unfolded on a Sunday evening, casting a shadow over the 179 passengers and crew aboard Flight 1067.
The source of the alarm: a critical failure in the aircraft’s left engine. As the plane climbed after departing Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport around 6:45 p.m., something went terribly wrong, triggering an immediate return to the gate.
But the mechanical issue didn’t just ground the flight; it ignited a fire. A visible flame erupted from the failing engine, sparking a grass fire alongside the runway, quickly drawing the attention of multiple fire departments.
Air traffic control, witnessing the unfolding drama, immediately questioned the pilot. “I saw a pretty large flame on takeoff,” the controller’s voice crackled over the radio, a stark confirmation of the severity of the situation.
The pilot’s response was direct and chilling: “We lost left engine straight out here for Delta 1067.” Emergency crews were dispatched without delay, scrambling to contain the blaze that had taken hold of the grass near the taxiway.
Despite the terrifying circumstances, the pilots managed a safe landing back in Savannah at approximately 7:12 p.m., less than half an hour after the initial takeoff. Passengers deplaned normally, shaken but unharmed.
Garden City Fire Rescue, alongside Savannah, Pooler, and the 165th Airlift Wing Fire Departments, worked swiftly to extinguish the flames, preventing further escalation. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among those on board or the responding emergency personnel.

A replacement aircraft was eventually deployed, allowing the passengers to finally continue their journey to Atlanta. While the delay was significant, the priority remained clear: the safety of everyone involved.
