The sting of defeat still fresh, Brighton & Hove Albion’s manager Fabian Hurzeler openly criticized Arsenal’s tactics following a narrow 1-0 loss, accusing them of blatant time-wasting throughout the match.
Bukayo Saka’s first-half goal proved decisive, propelling Arsenal further ahead in the Premier League standings, especially after Manchester City dropped points in a draw against Nottingham Forest. However, the result left a bitter taste for Hurzeler and his team.
A controversial moment ignited further frustration – a denied penalty for Brighton after a challenge on Mats Wieffer. Despite a VAR review, the referee’s decision stood, leaving Brighton feeling aggrieved.
Hurzeler didn’t shy away from directly addressing his concerns, singling out Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya as a key perpetrator of the perceived stalling tactics. He questioned Raya’s repeated instances of going to ground with apparent injuries.
Before the match, Hurzeler had already voiced his concerns, calling for the Premier League to address what he saw as a growing problem. After the final whistle, he doubled down on his plea for rule changes.
“It’s more about, for me, that he handles the other things better,” Hurzeler stated, referring to the broader issue of time-wasting. “The Premier League needs to find a rule because I think that’s nothing football what Arsenal did there.”
He proposed potential solutions, suggesting adding time onto the end of matches to compensate for delays and a stricter approach to issuing yellow cards for time-wasting offenses.
Hurzeler’s frustration was palpable when he asked a pointed question: “Did you see a goalkeeper go down three times in a game?” He left little doubt about his belief that Arsenal’s actions were unsportsmanlike and detrimental to the flow of the game.
While acknowledging the final decision on the penalty was accepted, Hurzeler clearly felt Arsenal’s overall approach overshadowed the match and deserved scrutiny from league officials.
