The decision stems from a strategic reassessment focused on maximizing efficiency and minimizing water loss. Company leaders determined that relocating the plant within the existing service area would prove more effective than relying on a distant water source.
The original concept involved drawing water from the Kaliwa Dam, a large-scale project expected to be completed by 2028. However, bringing that water into the distribution network presented challenges related to non-revenue water – the significant amount lost through leaks and unauthorized connections.
By building the treatment facility closer to consumers, the company aims to drastically reduce these losses, ensuring more water reaches paying customers. This internal relocation is expected to streamline operations and improve overall resource management.
The proposed plant is designed to produce 300 million liters of potable water daily, a substantial increase in capacity. Executives anticipate the project’s completion within three to four years, marking a critical step in securing the region’s water future.
While desalination – the process of converting seawater into freshwater – remains a potential long-term solution, it’s not currently a priority. Initial investigations have identified promising opportunities along Manila Bay, but the technology requires specialized expertise.
The company is actively exploring partnerships with international specialists to potentially develop a desalination plant in the future. This demonstrates a commitment to diversifying water sources and adapting to evolving needs.
The service area currently encompasses a vast region, including Manila (with limited exceptions), Quezon City, and numerous cities and towns in Metro Manila and Cavite province. Ensuring a reliable water supply for this expansive population is paramount.
