A wave of panic swept through a Jakarta school Friday as explosions ripped through the mosque during prayer time, leaving nearly one hundred people injured. The blasts, occurring as worshippers gathered, immediately triggered chaos and a frantic search for answers.
National police are now focusing their investigation on a student, identified as a suspect wounded in the incident. Evidence collected at the scene includes unidentified writing and traces of a powder believed to be linked to the explosions, according to Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
The initial casualty reports of 54 wounded have been revised upwards, with authorities now confirming a total of ninety-six injuries. Fourteen individuals remain hospitalized, two currently receiving intensive care for their wounds.
Investigators are meticulously examining all aspects of the suspect’s life, including their family background and online activity. Counter-terrorism unit Densus 88 has already conducted a search of the suspect’s home, seeking clues to the motive behind the attack.
Witness accounts paint a picture of initial confusion following the blasts. One student, Kinza Ghaisan Rayyan, recounted the shock, initially suspecting a malfunction in the sound system before realizing the explosion originated beneath the prayer mats.
While one suspect has been identified, authorities haven’t dismissed the possibility of others being involved. The investigation remains ongoing, aiming to uncover the full extent of the incident and the reasoning behind this shocking act of violence.
