A silent danger lurked within the sleek design of thousands of exercise bikes. Peloton has initiated a significant recall impacting nearly 45,000 bikes in Canada, triggered by reports of a critical component failing during use.
The issue centers on the seat post of the Original Series Bike+ models. Investigations revealed the post assembly could unexpectedly break while someone is riding, creating a sudden and dangerous fall risk.
This recall isn’t isolated to Canada; approximately 833,000 bikes in the United States are also affected. While only three reports of broken seat posts surfaced in the U.S., and none in Canada, the potential for injury prompted swift action.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission documented two injuries resulting from falls linked to the faulty seat posts. This underscored the urgency of addressing the problem and protecting riders.
Health Canada has issued a firm directive: immediately cease using any recalled exercise bike until a free replacement seat post is received from Peloton. The agency emphasizes the importance of prioritizing safety.
Peloton is proactively offering a complimentary replacement seat post for all affected models. The company stresses that installation can be done by the owner, simplifying the process for concerned customers.
These bikes were sold exclusively in Canada and the U.S. between December 2019 and July 2022, and were manufactured in Taiwan. Identifying an affected bike is straightforward – look for the “PL02” model number.
Further confirmation can be found in the serial number, which begins with the letter “T.” This number is discreetly located inside the front fork, or behind either the front fork or the flywheel.
The affected bikes are characterized by their dimensions – approximately four feet long and two feet wide – and feature adjustable seats and handlebars. These details help owners quickly determine if their equipment is part of the recall.
Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, the redistribution, sale, or even gifting of recalled products is strictly prohibited. This reinforces the seriousness of the recall and the need for full compliance.
